Trick or Treat – and your chance to win!

Boo!

One of our very favourite special occasions of the year is Halloween. There is something oddly delightful about startling your soul with a great horror movie or the insatiate need to read scary book after scary book. And the candy! Who could complain about candy?! Speaking of treats, we might have one for YOU! Make sure you read right to the bottom so you can fill in your details for a trick or treat from us!

Halloween also comes with the onus of decking yourself and the kids (if you have ‘em) out in the creepiest costumes, popping out the party supplies and Halloween house décor, and providing the best damn candy to all the kids in the neighbourhood. Whether you’re celebrating up large or settling in for a wildly thrilling night on the couch, we know exactly where you can find all of the best spooky paraphernalia this year….

Shock horror; it’s at North City.

LOOKING THE PART

Even if you’re more into glam than gore, Hallow’s Eve is still something to be celebrated. We’re loving these cute nail art looks – they’re pretty and dainty and unlikely to cause any bloodcurdling screaming. We also love the idea of cute zombies or ghosts! If you want to try something a little darker, ask for long black stiletto acrylics.

You can get your nails done at ProfessioNail, 4 Seasons Nails or Hair Beauty Nails – just show the teams an inspiration picture and let them do the magic!

If looking ghoulishly cool is on the agenda, you’re going to NEED a costume. Sometimes it’s no easy feat to find the right items at the right prices, so we’ve compiled some ideas for you, so you know exactly where to go. From budget-friendly props, makeup and face paint, make sure you check out Kmart and Bargain City. Doing your makeup at home is easy if you’ve found the right look. Here are some of our favourite finds below – you can even pick up an outfit for the doggo!

a. Little ghoul costume | b. Pet pumpkin costume | c. Pumpkin basket – all from Kmart

FEELING THE PART

There’s nothing cuter than a touch of glam witchy-woo to forgo looking bloody or dead. If dressing up isn’t an option, add a little touch of Halloween happiness to your life with a pop of horror, such as these “lazy bones” skeleton jamies, for a night curled up with a skull candle and scary novel. If you want to take it out of the house and change up your everyday look just a little, this temporary hair dye in a blue-y hue is to die for.

a. Loreal Colorvista semi-permanent hair dye | b. Lazy Bones pajamas | c. Tilly@home eclipse skull candle – all from Farmers

TERRIBLE TREATS

Cobweb brownies, Jack Skellington cake pops, “poisoned” candy apples…. There are so many yummy and shareable snacks to make for Halloween parties and wow friends and family. Hey, even if your night involves just a spine-chilling novel or cinema classic, you’re still going to need something sweet to get you through the scariest bits. Our favourite are these cute zombie cookies (you could even substitute these as mummies or vampires!) and these easy-peasy “blood” popsicles.

a. Bayly & Collus plates in black and quail | b. Koji by Zoku icepop molds | c. Capital Kitchen cookie cutters family – all from Stevens

GHASTLY GAMES

Are you the kind of person that reaaaally likes scary interactive activities? Here’s a tried and tested “favourite” of ours… The Evil Within game for Xbox, PS4 and PC. It’s truly downright terrifying, and we applaud you if you manage to make it through the first mission. Seriously, this one is not for the faint hearted! Full of jump scares, blood and gore, this is the most perfect activity for those partaking in Halloween activities. It’s on sale now for $29. You probably don’t want to play it alone though….

For fans of this formidable R18 feature, its sequel is coming out soon and you can preorder it at EB Games. If creepily cute collectable characters are more your cup of tea, we love the Annabelle Pop! Vinyl figure, but you can also collect Norman Bates, Carrie and Bride of Chucky.

a. Annabelle Pop! Vinyl collectible | b. The Evil Within (PS4) | c. The Evil Within (XBox) – all from EB Games

CHILLING CINEMA: NEW RELEASES

Make a night of it with two upcoming releases at Reading Porirua: The Snowman and Happy Death Day – both said to be terrifying. Hold onto your popcorn during the jump scares!

a. The Snowman – directed by Christopher B Langdon | b. Happy Death Day directed by Tomas Alfredson – both showing at Reading Cinemas

HAIR-RAISING READS

There’s nothing scarier than a book you can’t put down. These unnerving novels might put you in an early grave, but luckily Whitcoulls has a fantastic range of not-so-scary Halloween history reads for kids (and you!) if you’d rather fall asleep later on. Any book in the Goosebumps series by RL Stine are absolute childrens’ classics, and Halloween is THE best night to sink your teeth into a new one. Stephen King’s IT has also resurfaced in cinemas recently, so if killer clowns get your pulse racing, dive into this old classic for a truly eerie read. You can also see a great range at Paper Plus.

a. IT by Stephen King | b. There Once Lived a Woman Who Tried to Kill Her Neighbours’ Baby by Ludmilla Petrushevskaya | c. Goosebumps; The Horror at Camp Jellyjam by RL Stine – all from Whitcoulls
